You spent how much??

I have no idea how much i spend on music, especially not at the Apple online music store.

I get statements each week saying that I’ve spent a quid or two. But I was curious to know how much id spent in the two years since I’ve have owned an iPod.

I wrote a quick Python script to pull out the information. I was quite shocked to find almost £120 worth of purchases. The £0.79’s sure add up over time. But the good thing is that every single tune is one I would want to keep as opposed to 1 in 10 which is on average what I get from buying poor albums from HMV on the strength of one single.

I’ve only bought one whole album – Neil Young’s Living with war. Which is a pretty good album, but I did miss having the cover in the shelf and having a more politically meaty statement sitting on my shelf for friends to judge me on when they come around for dinner (you know you do it!).

The only thing that bugs me, and is a big part of the DRM debate is that these are all sunk costs. I cannot sell on a tune second hand on ebay or amazon market place. It’s only when I realise that I may top a thousand pounds or more worth of content that I really appreciate the problems with protected content. iTunes are selling me a hybrid product and service, and it’s not exactly like a CD.
